If you’re thinking about adding wainscoting to your home, one of the first decisions you’ll face is the style. The two most popular options we install across Toronto and the GTA are picture frame wainscoting and recessed panel wainscoting. They both look impressive, but they’re built very differently — and that affects the final look, the timeline, and the investment.
Here’s a straightforward comparison to help you decide which one is the right fit for your space.
What Is Picture Frame Wainscoting?
Picture frame wainscoting uses moulding profiles applied directly onto your existing drywall to create elegant rectangular frames on the wall surface. The moulding is measured, mitered, and fastened to the wall — then filled, caulked, and left paint-ready.
The moulding profiles project off the wall surface, adding texture and architectural detail to an otherwise flat wall. The result is clean, refined, and works equally well in modern and traditional interiors. It’s one of the most versatile styles we install — popular in dining rooms, hallways, living rooms, and staircases throughout Vaughan, Markham, and Mississauga.
We offer five picture frame configurations: half wall, full wall single level, full wall with double box, full wall double level, and full wall double level with chair rail. Each creates a different visual effect depending on your ceiling height and room proportions.

What Is Recessed Panel Wainscoting?
Recessed panel wainscoting is a more involved build. Instead of applying moulding onto a flat wall, we construct the panels outward from the wall surface using MDF — available in 1/2″, 5/8″, or 3/4″ thickness depending on the design and depth you want.
Here’s how it works: we cut the MDF into strips sized to form the framework of boxes on your wall — either half wall or full wall. Once the framework is built and secured, we install inset mouldings inside each box to complete the paneled look. Every MDF joint is carefully sanded so the seams are completely flat and invisible once painted.
Because the panels are built outward from the wall, your baseboards need to be installed on top of the MDF layer. That means any room getting recessed panel wainscoting also gets new baseboards as part of the project.
For homeowners who want an extra-smooth finish inside the panels, we can add a 1/4″ MDF backing as the first layer. This gives the recessed areas a perfectly flat surface rather than relying on the existing drywall texture.
The finished result has real physical depth — it looks and feels like custom millwork or built-in cabinetry. It’s the style that gets the strongest reactions from homeowners and guests, and it’s a popular choice in Richmond Hill, Oakville, and Burlington for formal living and dining spaces.

Key Differences at a Glance
Construction: Picture frame moulding is applied directly onto your existing drywall. Recessed panels are built outward from the wall using layered MDF strips and inset mouldings.
Depth: Picture frame adds texture and dimension through the moulding profile itself. Recessed panel creates significantly deeper dimension by building outward from the wall with layered MDF — giving it a heavier, furniture-grade feel.
Timeline: Picture frame wainscoting is the faster installation. Recessed panel work takes roughly three times longer due to the additional material, construction, and finishing involved.
Baseboards: With picture frame, your existing baseboards can usually stay in place. With recessed panels, new baseboards are required because they install on top of the MDF.
Investment: Recessed panel wainscoting costs more because of the extra material, labour, and time. Picture frame is the more budget-friendly option without sacrificing style.
Look and feel: Picture frame delivers a clean, elegant accent. Recessed panel delivers a richer, more substantial look — closer to custom millwork.
Which One Should You Choose?
There’s no wrong answer — it comes down to the look you want, the room you’re working with, and your budget.
Choose picture frame if you want a beautiful upgrade that adds architectural detail without a heavy investment. It works in almost any room, installs quickly, and looks sharp in both modern and traditional homes.
Choose recessed panel if you want maximum visual impact and a furniture-grade feel. It’s ideal for spaces where you want the walls to make a statement — formal dining rooms, living rooms, entryways, or anywhere you want that custom-built look.
Both styles can be installed half wall or full wall, and both can be carried up staircases to tie the design together throughout your home.
