Wall Design Options as a Final Step of Your Renovation

Accent wall design in a Toronto home

The floors are down, the paint is fresh and the furniture is on its way. So why does the room still feel like something is missing? Usually it is the walls. Flat, plain walls are fine, but a well-chosen wall design is what gives a finished room its character and makes it feel custom rather than standard.

Wall design is the perfect last step of a renovation. The messy work is done, you already know the colors and lighting in the space, and you can choose a feature that suits the room instead of guessing. Below are four popular options we install at Home Trim across Toronto and the GTA, and what each one brings to a home.

1. Acoustic Slat Wall Panels

Acoustic slat panels are narrow vertical wood slats mounted on a soft acoustic backing. They are one of the most requested looks right now, and for good reason: they add warmth and texture, and they also help soften sound in the room.

Where they work best:

  • Behind a TV or fireplace in a living room
  • Behind the bed in a master bedroom
  • Home offices, media rooms and open-concept spaces where echo is a problem

The clean vertical lines make ceilings feel taller, and the natural wood tones pair well with both modern and traditional interiors. You can keep the natural finish or choose a darker tone for a more dramatic look.

2. Geometric Design Made of MDF Strips

If you want a bold, modern statement, a geometric wall is hard to beat. Thin MDF strips are cut precisely and installed in patterns such as diamonds, squares, angled lines or custom layouts, then painted for a smooth, seamless finish.

Why homeowners choose it:

  • It creates a strong focal point with a single wall
  • Painting the strips and the wall the same deep colour gives a rich, tone-on-tone effect that looks very high-end
  • MDF takes paint beautifully and gives crisp, consistent lines
  • The pattern can be designed around your room, furniture and lighting

Geometric walls look especially good in dark colours such as charcoal, navy or deep green, where light and shadow bring out the pattern.

3. Wainscoting Accent Wall: Recessed Panel and Picture Frame

Wainscoting is a timeless classic, and an accent wall is a great way to use it without covering the whole room. Two of the most popular styles are:

Recessed panel. The panels sit slightly inset within a frame, creating depth and a refined, traditional look. It is a natural fit for dining rooms, hallways and staircases.

Picture frame. Slim frames of moulding are applied directly to the wall in rectangles or squares. The style is lighter and cleaner, and it works in both classic and modern homes.

Both styles can be painted in a single colour for a soft, elegant effect, or in a bold colour for more drama. You can learn more about this service on our wainscoting page.

4. Two-Thirds Wall Board and Batten

Board and batten uses wide vertical boards with narrow strips (battens) covering the seams, creating a clean, rhythmic pattern. Installed to about two-thirds of the wall height, it gives a taller and more architectural look than a traditional half-wall treatment.

What makes it special:

  • The vertical lines draw the eye upward and add height to the room
  • It suits kids’ rooms, bedrooms, living rooms
  • It combines a classic farmhouse feel with a modern, tailored finish

Finishing the top with a neat cap or ledge makes the wall even more polished, and it can double as a small display shelf.

How to Choose the Right Wall Design

A few simple questions help narrow it down:

  • What is the room used for? Acoustic slats suit TV and media areas, while wainscoting suits dining rooms and entryways.
  • What style is your home? Traditional interiors suit recessed panel wainscoting, and modern spaces suit geometric or slat designs.
  • How much drama do you want? A single accent wall in a dark colour makes a strong statement. A light, tone-on-tone finish is calmer.
  • Which wall gets the most attention? Choose the wall you see first when you walk in, or the one behind your main piece of furniture.

If you are unsure, we are happy to look at the space with you and suggest what will work best.
